WOX (World of XOOPS) Newsletter # 50 (September 2012)

WOX - World Of Xoops

Welcome to the September 2012 issue of WOX (World of XOOPS) Newsletter  (see here previous versions).

A small celebration: this is the 50th issue of our WOX Newsletter!

We have closed September on a positive note - on Sept. 29, 2012 we had the opportunity to present XOOPS at the CodeWorks PHP Conference in Cincinnati.

Two months ago we've announced that the cross-marketing agreement with our host has not be renewed, and therefore we need $100/month to pay for our dedicated server. Also last month the community came through! Within the first week we had the required donations for October! THANK YOU SO MUCH to everybody who donated money (see the list below)!

Please donate TODAY for future months!

Work continues XOOPS 2.6.0. You can learn about XOOPS 2.6.0 Alpha 1 here. See the Roadmap for XOOPS 2.6 by ForMuss and Mage.

You can discuss it in the thread, and let us know what you like and what you don't like. You can follow the development on XOOPS SVN, or you can subscribe to our SVN mailing list to receive updates.

WOX (World of XOOPS) Newsletter # 49 (August 2012)

WOX - World Of Xoops

Welcome to the August 2012 issue of WOX (World of XOOPS) Newsletter  (see here previous versions).

Last month we've announced that the cross-marketing agreement with our host has not be renewed, and therefore we need $100/month to pay for our dedicated server.

And the community came through! Within two weeks we had the required donations for September! THANK YOU SO MUCH to everybody who donated money (see the list below)!

Please donate TODAY for future months!

The biggest event of the past month was publishing of the Roadmap for XOOPS 2.6 by ForMuss and Mage. You can discuss it in the thread, and let us know what you like and what you don't like. You can follow the development on XOOPS SVN, or you can subscribe to our SVN mailing list to receive updates.

This month was very busy for our Module Developers, with couple of new modules, and several conversions to XOOPS 2.5.5 Admin GUI. This way we are getting closer to having the most important/popular modules sharing the same user-friendly GUI.

WOX (World of XOOPS) Newsletter # 48 (July 2012)

WOX - World Of Xoops

Welcome to the July 2012 issue of WOX (World of XOOPS) Newsletter  (see here previous versions).

And from the less pleasant news, our Server Host didn't renew our agreement about free hosting of the XOOPS site, i.e. starting in July we have to pay $100 for our dedicated server. This means that we need to get more donations!

How are we doing with donations?

In May we've received a single donation of $25, and in June $5. Clearly, this will not cover our cost. Therefore, we would like to call on the community to donate money to XOOPS Foundation, so we can cover the $100/month cost of our Dedicated server.

Please donate TODAY!

Recent Highlights:

  • Roadmap for XOOPS 2.6

  • XOOPS Innovation Award - for people who create something very unique and innovative for XOOPS. This time the award goes to  Simon Roberts (Wishcraft) from Australia for the creation of IP Log Module, to log IPs of site visitors, and many other modules.

==> You can see our previous winners here

  • XOOPSer of the Month Awardiis given to XOOPS members who show extraordinary dedication to XOOPS, and go the extra mile for XOOPS. This month, it goes to Ali Nili (Irmtfan) from Iran, for his support on the XOOPS Forums.

==> You can see our previous winners here

Congratulations to all of our Winners. Starting this year, all Winners will receive a free book of their choice from O'Reilly. Also a free copy of PHP Storm from JetBrain

Work continues on XOOPS 2.6.0, with Mage extracting features into stand-alone modules (like Banners). You can follow the development on XOOPS SVN, or you can subscribe to our SVN mailing list to receive updates.

As every month,  we would like to encourage everybody to ask a question:

What can I do for XOOPS?
What could I contribute to XOOPS?

There are many areas where you can contribute, based on your skill level: Core, modules, themes, documentation, providing support on the Forums, and translating XOOPS into local languages.

We need to create more teamwork and more community spirit by getting more people actively contributing to XOOPS.

WOX (World of XOOPS) Newsletter # 46 (May 2012)

WOX - World Of Xoops

Welcome to the May 2012 issue of WOX (World of XOOPS) Newsletter  (see here previous versions

We are doing a little bit better with WOX - the May edition of WOX is being published in May!

Our XOOPS friends at www.arabxoops.com have been very busy showcasing XOOPS to many organizations and government agencies, and the great news is that after testing XOOPS agains other major Open Source CMS solutions, XOOPS was selected to power the Libyan National Elections High Commission. This is a second important win for XOOPS, after being selected previously as the CMS of choice to power the Libyan Ministry of Defense Website. Congratulations to Mowaffaq and his team!

Work continues on XOOPS 2.6.0. Nicolas (ForMuss) did an awesome job incorporating Twitter's Bootstrap HTML/CSS toolkit in both Admin and User GUI, and Mage is doing fantastic work extracting system functionality into extensions/plugins. You can follow the development on XOOPS SVN, or you can subscribe to our SVN mailing list to receive updates.

Again, we would like to encourage everybody to ask themselves a question:

What can I do for XOOPS?
What could I contribute to XOOPS?

There are many areas where you can contribute, based on your skill level: Core, modules, themes, documentation, providing support on the Forums, and translating XOOPS into local languages.

We need to create more teamwork and more community spirit by getting more people actively contributing to XOOPS.

Let's make XOOPS a true "Community Project"!

Recent Highlights:

  • XOOPS 2.5.5 Final released

  • Libyan National Elections High Commission powered by XOOPS

  • XOOPS Innovation Award - for people who create something very unique and innovative for XOOPS. This time the award goes to Angelo Rocha (angelorocha) from Brazil for his work on various innovative modules.

  • XOOPSer of the Month Awardis given to XOOPS members who show extraordinary dedication to XOOPS, and go the extra mile for XOOPS. This month, it goes to Christelle Gaulupeau (Cesag) from France, for her help in translations, and testing of modules.

Congratulations to all of our Winners. Starting this year, all Winners will receive a free book of their choice from O'Reilly. Also a free copy of PHP Storm from JetBrain

WOX (World of XOOPS) Newsletter # 45 (April 2012)

WOX - World Of Xoops

Welcome to the April 2012 issue of WOX (World of XOOPS) Newsletter  (see here previous versions

It's been a while since the last issue, almost a year, but things have been hectic around here, we had some turbulent times that kept us busy, and there are only 24 hours in a day But we hope that we'll be able to get back to our regular monthly cycle.

The most important thing is that XOOPS development is going forward, with XOOPS 2.5.5 Final released this week. This is the best XOOPS version ever, with several bugs being fixed.
In parallel to working on XOOPS 2.5.5, the Core Team has also worked very hard on cleaning up and refactoring of the Core as the foundation for XOOPS 2.6.0, and you'll see the results soon. Just to give you an idea about the magnitude of the work that especially Trabis did, is the fact that the current XOOPS 2.6.0 Core, which is still in the pre-Alpha stage, already runs on PHP 5.4 with NO SINGLE error in E_STRICT mode. If you want to check out the source code, you can download it from our SourceForge SVN, but be aware - this is a "pre-Alpha" code and a lot of wrong things can happen, and a lot of things are missing.

The current focus is on improving quality and streamlining the source code so we have a solid foundation for the future. There was just too much PHP4 and old XOOPS related code that got accumulated over time, and we needed to get rid of all this "baggage"

So XOOPS 2.6.0 will be our focus for the upcoming months, as well as finalizing our Basic Module Pack, with all the module sharing the same "look & feel"

The key to make all of this happen, is to have enough developers and contributors. So we would like to encourage everybody to ask themselves a question:

What can I do for XOOPS?
What could I contribute to XOOPS?

We cannot expect that few people will do everything:

- develop Core
- develop Modules
- develop themes
- develop documentation
- provide support
- translate into local languages

By putting too much pressure on them by expecting too much, it will only cause their "burnout" and quitting XOOPS

We need to create more teamwork and more community spirit by getting more people actively contributing to XOOPS.

Let's make XOOPS a true "Community Project"!
