Xoops Engine Experiences and Tutorials

Robot Control and Session Management
Spiders is a robot manager tool, that imports a list of all crawler and scanner robots on the web. It allows you to use XOOPS Permissions to control the data that robots list online your site. It will also log the robot in using a post loader and display when the robot is online on you 'Whos Online'.
Do you want your robots like GoogleBot, Yahoo Slurp! and others to log in and identify on your xoops installation? Then spiders is for you!!! The robot text file used is taken from an online resource of Robot data and stores it in your database. Remember to adjust your mainfile.php to include the post loader after the common file is loaded. Robot Manager (Spiders) is a good way to control what your site displays in search engines.

Xoops Engine Alpha 2 Is Released
Today we are proudly to present XOOPS community with Xoops Engine Alpha 2 release.
Since the Alpha 1 Release in January 2011, there have been many progresses in Xoops Engine development. XOOPS, or eXtensible Object Oriented Portal System, well known as a leading open source CMS and portal system, now becomes a development engine for web and mobile applications.
XoopsEngine, as the new brand of the XOOPS Project, supports open and extensible engines backboned with its multi-engine architecture. By taking advantages of PHP frameworks like Zend Framework, template engine Smarty and AJAX libraries like jQuery, the Xoops Engine brings the Project to a new generation.
Some selected features that are most wanted by community available in Xoops Engine:
* Built-in cache mechanism for high performance
* Clear M-V-C with AOP and event hook
* Extensible URL rewrite for better SEO
* App/module clone and theme inheritance for application extension
* New model mechanism for easy development with less code
* New layout/block/widget for flexible and better user experience
After Alpha1 release many developers have started to contribute to Xoops Engine development, including well know developers from other open source projects.
Some of the new progresses in Alpha 2:
* Namespace for apps and modules
* WYSIWYG editor factory with CKEditor and jQuery based ClEditor
* Security handler and resource, added XSS filter, IP protection, super global contamination, etc.
* Block and theme mechanism improvement
* Protection for config files

Welcome to the April 2011 issue of WOX (World of XOOPS) Newsletter. Also this month we're a little bit late. I hope, this month we'll catch up! (see here previous versions)

Highlights of the last month:
XOOPS 2.5.1 and XOOPS 2.5.1a have been released
- XOOPS Innovation Award - for people who create something very unique and innovative for XOOPS. This time the award goes to to Charly Cobben (chco2) from Netherlands for his work on QRCode module and to Grégory Mage (Mage) from France for his work on ModuleAdmin class. He is also author of the TDMDownloads module to be updated soon.
- XOOPSer of the Month Award: is given to XOOPS members who show extraordinary dedication to XOOPS, and go the extra mile for XOOPS. This month, it goes to Jim Garrett (ZySpec) from the USA, for his help on various module, incl. xDirectory, and recently several modules from the upcoming "XOOPS Basic Modules Pack", especially MyLinks!
Congratulations to all of our Winners. Starting this year, all Winners will receive a free book of their choice from O'Reilly. Also a free copy of PHP Storm from JetBrain.

Updated QRCode module for XOOPS (1.01 RC)
Dear XOOPS community and developers.
We've just updated the QRCcode module for XOOPS.
With the first release this module allows other developers to included QRCode creation within their modules. This release offers admin users a QRCode generator wizard to instantly create QRCodes.
If you are looking for a module that creates QRCode for each page shown automatically I suggest you download the XURL module. This can be found here.
Version 1.01 of the QRCode module can be found here. Or on the XOOPS SVN.
About the QRCode module
It allows for easy creation of various QRCodes.
Currently the following QRCode are supported :
- Visit a website
- Call a phonenumber
- Send a SMS to a cellphone
- Plain text
- Send an email
- Lookup GPS coordinates
- Create a business card
Developers can easily utilize this module for creating QRCodes. Detailed instructions are available in the admin section after installment. Install as any regular module by copying the contents of the zip folder to your modules folder.
