FnGeeks.net Joins the Xoops Community

FnGeeks.net is a geek culture community site that has been in operation since Oct 2001. With our recent growth we decided to make the jump from acting as a simple phpbb website to a full blown xoops portal. I look forward to your comments.

XOOPS CMS/Microsoft Applications Deal “Inevitable”

As found on frxoops.org:

REDMOND, Wash., March 23, 2004 -- It has recently come to light that Kazumi Ono (known as Onokazu), the Head of the XOOPS Development Team and Helton Hartford, the Development Director at Microsoft’s Application Branch, have been discussing the possibility of future co-operation between the two groups. Hartford has announced his intention to buy out the GNU license for commercial use from the well known content manager, describing the process as “inevitable.”

He was also quick to point out the value of the XOOPS platform “… the XOOPS application is by the far the safest investment in the CMS range. The announcement of XOOPS 3.0 has us all very excited, and if things go well we’ll be integrating it into our core development process as soon as 2006.”

Hartford also hinted at the possibility of discounts for existing XOOPS users who want to upgrade to 3.0 once Microsoft have taken control. This news will no doubt be of great interest to the wider XOOPS community, and will help allay fears that the platform will become unavailable to those outside of Microsoft after the merger.

However, the Development Director has said that XOOPS support sites, such as http://www.xoops.org, will not be given the chance to upgrade to 3.0 after the merger, as these sites would only serve as “unnecessary competition” to Microsoft’s own Support Centre.

Since then it has emerged that Kazumi Ono has negotiated for top XOOPS figures, such as Herko Coomans and Goghs Cheng, to be offered contracts at Microsoft in order for them to remain at the forefront of the XOOPS development process during and after the integration process.

When pressed on a date for the signing of a contract, Ono would only go as far as saying “soon.” In any case, this development is sure to send shockwaves through out the XOOPS community.

New XOOPS Image

It is with great pleasure that I bring to you this tiny little 80x15 file that weighs in at only 480 bytes (Less then 1k!)

Adding these small images to your site cuts down on load time and gives credit in a non intrusive manner that just looks cool!

Show your support and add this little tag to your site!

Resized Image

Enjoy!

Hi xoopers,
we(Mithrandir and I) have converted the script "tplleaguestats" into a module for Xoops system. This module allows you to easily manage the league of your favourite team and show your supporters detailed statistics on multiple seasons too.
We have released it as RC to put it under your test. (note: this means it is a testing vesion, not a version ready for live websites and production environments!)
Actually only english and italian languages are available so,if you like it,please translate the lang files into your language and we'll include them into the final version.

[minus.driven] goes Xoops again!

minusdriven.com is dedicated to the band [minus.driver].
This is not my first Xoops site, however, I felt that the Xoops system was perfect for the content I wanted to include. My vision for the site was to have an interactive community of fans in which the members of the site could play an integral part in the evolution of the content on the site. I did, however, feel that the traditional Xoops look was not quite right for the direction I wanted to go with the site. I had an idea for a theme that was different than any other I had seen so far in browsing Xoops sites, however I was not sure if it would work.

Amazon bookstore module released

Hi -

I've released an Amazon associates bookstore module. It's fairly simple, so far. But I'll be adding features.

It's available at http://www.worldware.com/modules/mydownloads/

It's running at http://www.worldware.com

Feedback is encouraged, both about the code, as it's my first xoops module, and about features, etc.

RSS Syndication That Works!

As a xoops user, I needed a module that would automatically created RSS and JS feeds for the mylinks module. The bad news is, the only module that would do the job was Lykos Syndication, and it had not been updated in a long time to support the new paths, query strings and database usage of the lastest version of xoops.

I've fixed the module so that it now creates proper rss and js feeds for the mylinks and mydownload modules. Now when someones running your rss or js feed on their page, it will properly link to the page or file.

File uploader available

Many people have asked about a file uploader recently so I have decided to place this news item. There is a simple file uploader module available that allows a single directory on your server to receive file upload and download traffic. The user interface offers a "file browse" window to select any file on your local machine. There is also a description form box to accompany each file uploaded. Files are displayed in date order in a table shown on the same page. The title of each uploaded file is a clickable link allowing it to be viewed online as a preview.
