Demo site for XOOPS Themes goes LIVE

Posted by Mamba on 2010/5/12 17:30:00 (7674 reads) | Posted on Themes
We are very pleased to announce that thanks to a tremendous effort by Burning, we have now a XOOPS Themes demo site: http://themes.xoops.org

Click to see original Image in a new window

There are currently 1,945 themes there, but we're sure that very soon there will be over 2,000 of them for your review and testing

Burning also linked all the themes there to our Theme Gallery, i.e. if your are in the Theme Gallery and want to see how the particular theme looks like in a real Web environment, you just need to click on the "preview icon":

Click to see original Image in a new window

Click to see original Image in a new window

and a new window/tab will open showing you the XOOPS Themes Demo site with your selected theme.

Burning is one of our most dedicated XOOPS supporters. Already twice "XOOPSer of the Month", he continues to provide a tremendous support for this community and we truly appreciate his help, support, and dedication!!!

Thank you, Burning!!!!

Good job burning .

But there is a problem in the Theme Gallery. The preview link is also available with backend themes... But their link goes to the front end.. (?xoops_theme_select=backend_theme_name)

That's what we need.

Also, I found small bug with GoogleChrome. If you for first time open Theme Gallery (no demo site) there is sometimes problem with display. I had few times strange two columns without preview button and if you click on uploader link then you get real display of content.
Burning if you never get this kind of display I'll attach here image what it looks.

It would be handy if there could be the other way round also a link from the selected theme to its info page in the theme gallery.
An idea to realize this could be a ghost module, which accesses the database of the repository and searches there the selected theme name, and make then a redirection to the info page URL. If not found it redirects to the theme gallery.

Now there is a link to the theme gallery, but I think people will look for a download link. So maybe a link (to the theme gallery) with 'Download this theme' would already more helpful.

Also a little explaination of the functions of the main menu may be helpful.

Maybe also a warning, that some themes are old and may not always fit as intented, but that these defects, can mosttimes easily be cured by some additional CSS.

Maybe some example modules as News and CBB 3.08 would also be a nice addition.

I agree with Ghia.

I am not sure how easy/difficult it could be. A cross download link on the "XOOPS Themes" to download the theme will be would be an excellent idea.

Great work Brurning.

Perfectly well! Thanks Burning and Mamba.

It would be desirable to see in the near future the catalogue for paid themes.

I would like to state wishes concerning themes from IXThemes Project:

All themes, since release 2.6 it is possible to adjust as 2 or 3 columns, also as left-column or right-column.
All options are made in a file assigns.html.
If correctly to adjust these themes that your catalogue will replenish with several more tens themes with a various arrangement of columns.
Also themes by IXThemes have slides, but at you they for some reason are not present?

hi'

Thanks for comments and for bugs feedback.

We still have troubles with templates and / or cache. Please be patient

Great! Thanks for this!

Maybe we could vote for best themes, or to vote what theme to be removed from list coz lots of them are very old and look ugly.

@burning Don't warry, we can wait, just take your time.

@bjuti Nice idea

I don't like when you have tons od themes in menu, it's frustrating to find what you need. But in combination with theme gallery where you browse themes and find what you want and you can try real demo of this theme, this is great idea!

Also, I tink it would be great if we can have more categories of those new themes, like color (red, green, blue, other color themes, and then blog/fun/nature/corporative/touristic and so on theme categories (or tags) and then you can chose what tags you need. Let's say I need some funny, yellow theme for my site. This could save time when you looking for some theme.
It's hard to find something when you have 2000+ themes. Nice to have all those but it's almost useless because nobody haven't so much time to browse all those themes.

And also bjuti's proposal can help in those searches.

Hope this can be accomplished.

Keep the good work Burning! Click to see original Image in a new window

EDIT: Bjuti there is already ability to rate every theme in gallery!

hi'

The concern with the xoops cache seems resolved. If you see any strange behavior, please report
Other changes : it is now possible to navigate througt designer albums.

There are many requests to improve themes gallery. Thanks !

01 • Ghia / Deepak :
"Now there is a link to the theme gallery, but I think people will look for a download link. So maybe a link (to the theme gallery) with 'Download this theme' would already more helpful."
> I'm agree, it is a good idea
> it is not so simple as espected
> main issue is to hide in adress bar the folder wich contains archives
> I will contact a developer to find a solution, may be Ghia himself :)

02 • Ghia :
"Maybe also a warning, that some themes are old and may not always fit as intented, but that these defects, can mosttimes easily be cured by some additional CSS."
> good idea but huge task !
> there are two main categories : old (for designers who want to update old themes, http://www.xoops.org/modules/news/article.php?storyid=5173) and new themes (it means themes that display blocks down the center column)
> solution 1 : we may have to make more explicit these categories ?
> solution 2 : we have an additional description field, it should be possible to reveal this kind of information directly on the album page.
> ... there are hundreds of themes, it would not be for tomorrow !

03 • Ghia :
"Maybe some example modules as News and CBB 3.08 would also be a nice addition."
> good idea but wich modules ? and how many ?
> but it requires maintenance
> and we need someone to fill modules tables
> ... is there someone for this job ?

04 • Algalochkin :
"It would be desirable to see in the near future the catalogue for paid themes."
> Is xoops.org should create this kind of commercial album ? Sensitive issue that deserves consideration.
> I believe there is no technical difficulty, we could create a new main category (as we could also create a new category for frameworks created by Kris and Bleekk)

05 • bjuti / sadistiko :
"Maybe we could vote for best themes, or to vote what theme to be removed from list coz lots of them are very old and look ugly."
> if we delete themes, we must agree on criteria. Not so simple :(
> if I well translate, the issue is to highlight the most beautiful creations and thus to highlight the graphics capabilities of Xoops
> The first objective of this library of themes was to gather all creations (a maximum). I am well aware that the current storage (time, name, notes, hits) is not practical.
> we are currently limited by the tool we use (eXtGallery, a module for photos album). We would need developments or to change module, for example, tag feature does not exist :(
> for moment to highlight themes we could use blocks (example : http://www.babylonbyxoops.net/modules/xoops-themes/index.php)

- Any idea to improve it is welcome.
- As explain, we are limited for moment by module used. Contribution from a developer would be very appreciated.
- About templates, a (professional) designer is already working on, it should be ready next month :)

Thank you Burning for keeping the xoops "wardrobe" afloat :)

As for the comments before some valid points, some not so valid I'll only answer to one.

If a theme is ugly in your eyes or 10k people's eyes, it doesn't mean we should erase it from history.
Allow new designers to see where X designer failed... so learn from other people's mistakes rather then your own, saves time and energy. And nevertheless maybe the designer really struggled to build it, you simply acknowledge the effort, tell him its ugly and move on ;)

Hmm I was considering this new website as a support platform for the xoops theme gallery. Like you go to the xoops theme gallery page » Browse themes (old or new ones) sorting them by hits (popularity) and all » Preview your theme on the themes.xoops.org » Download from the Gallery. From this point I don't think it needs all the features suggested. Another thing is that you want guys to make a brand new theme gallery on the basis of this website. Awesome work anyways, Burning. It was long expected and needed.
