XOOPS continues with development of Instant-Zero community modules

Posted by Mamba on 2009/11/19 12:10:00 (1705 reads) | Posted on XOOPS
As some of you know already, unfortunately, Instant-Zero closed its door as it went out of business. This is definitely a very sad news for all of us.

Their modules have been very popular within the XOOPS community and some of them are also used here on our Website.

Of course, many of you were asking what will happen next.

There were two issues:

1) Where do we get support for current versions?
2) Will these modules work with future versions of XOOPS?

As in the past, we'll continue to support the modules here on our Forums, so there will be no impact on our users.

And to ensure compatibility of Instant-Zero modules with future versions of XOOPS, the developers of XOOPS will continue with maintaining, upgrading, and new development of Instant-Zero modules.

It is important for us that these modules continue to function with each and every new version of XOOPS.

The current versions, which are compatible with XOOPS 2.4.1, can be downloaded from XOOPS SourceForge (see below), and the source code has been placed earlier this week in our SVN.

We are inviting the whole XOOPS community to help us with continues improvement and future development of these modules.

It is the beauty of the Open Source that when one developer leaves to pursue other interests, other developers from the community can continue with the development.

We would like to say "Thank you" to Herve for all his contributions to XOOPS, and wish him all the best in his future endeavors. Hopefully, one day he'll be back with his XOOPS Family!

You can download current versions of the modules (all compatible with XOOPS 2.4.1) from here:

I think we should get our hands on modules and recover the "move to blue" movement. We need to get modules updated and assure we do not loose the ones that are working. This will be my focus as soon I get the core 99% stable: update my modules and make old ones compatible with this version.

As for IZ modules, I'll help maintaining them and give the necessary support. XOOPS cannot stop.

I have one question, how about the paid mods. I cant get any support for my SimpleNewsletter module i paid for.
Posted: 2009/11/19 14:45 • Updated: 2009/11/19 14:45
I hope a lot of people feel concerned. We have to focus on these modules, above all News and Oledrion.

Thanks Trabis, I hope other developers will help you !

This is great news as Hervé's modules are the core modules I use when building Xoops sites. It's sad Hervé stops developing modules, I want to thank him for alle the good work he did for Xoops!

It's a pity certainly. But other developers of XOOPS modules with fresh ideas will come.

I agree trabis, XOOPS can't stop.

I am currently focused on two points:
for XOOPS project, build the new XOOPS software architecture;
for XOOPS development, build a practical support ecosystem.

I have finished proof of concept for XOOPS new architecture, a site will be launched soon built on the new architecture.
For support ecosystem, we already have some meaningful practice, hope we can share something with the community.

Xoops needs default modules in it's packages. So, my opinion that news module should be default content module in Xoops.

News 1.65 should be SEO friendly and should have SEF URL option, to have clean urls.

Also, Xoops Care and iSearch should be in default package also.

Imagine a dummy new user called Default Joe. He wants to try Xoops, he download it and there is nothing in it. Just core. It's a mistake. New users must see all that's good in Xoops with one click.

:)

It would be very nice if some one would publish here all those useful hacks published in their site like "How to show a block in any place of a theme" and many others.

Seems to me great but has given Hervé his approval? I hope so. It'd be important to Xoops.

It seems to me that myDownloads is not an "emergency" since TDMDownloads has been published :
• with more features
• with scripts for importation (from myDownloads and WFDownloads)

Is there anything the communicty can do to bring IZ back to bizness?
Posted: 2009/11/20 4:35 • Updated: 2009/11/20 4:35
I also bought SimpleNewsLetter. Fortunately, Hervé has recently sent me version 2.31. Since this module is not in the list of Mamba: will somebody take over the maintenance of this module ? If Hervé agrees, I can provide a copy of this module to anyone who takes over.

Thanks !

I talked to Herve about it, and he told me that it's too late. I assume that he already filed papers for bankruptcy.

I totally agree with you. We are discussing it as we speak.

So, my opinion that news module should be default content module in Xoops.

This will not happen because of its size - 22MB. But we'll provide something very basic in the initial download, something like Content or DH-Info.

News could become part of some other "advanced" package, e.g. "Enterprise" or "Community"

I am sorry for IZ.

But about modules, in my personal opinion, maybe its time to merge news & publish (trabis version)
I like very much publish for its clone, seo, metas and more functions trabis has added.

These are functions already set in publish, make it more dynamic.

Probably Xoops core is packaged by itself but also provide modules packages alongside core releases. The other thing would be to link to modules sites so users always gets the latest version of the modules.
just an idea.

I talked with Trabis about modules in general (not about News in particular), and we agree that it would make sense to review our modules (old and new), and see if we could merge some of them, as part of the "Move to Blue"

There are currently too many modules and too many options, which confuses some new users.

So we'll definitely come back to publish "XOOPS Module Packs" containing current modules, and see if we can merge some of them into "officially supported" modules.

Yes, that would be very good!

It's true, but it is because FPDF or something.

I think the publisher will be the best solution for many reasons :
- Small module (around 3 mb )
- multiple use : excellent for all kind of websites : news, personal...etc
- Easy to use
- contains a set of nice and useful blocks : extended search, latest news, columns...etc
- able to be online cloned within few minutes

The Editors Should Not be Included in the Core , it better if they left as an Opition ..that will reduce the Size of the Package .and that Just an Opinion ..

So will Xoops.org continue to use "News" module on its website????...
Posted: 2009/11/28 9:10 • Updated: 2009/11/28 9:10
For the moment, there are no plans to start with a new module in the short future. The closure of Instant-Zero did not change that. We continue with News for a while.
And I think for new sites, News is still the best or a very good choice!

Just scrolling throught the News when I stumbled upon this. Read with great sadness and my first thoughts are with Hervé and the gang.

Bon chance, mon ami.
