Updates on the XOOPS Project as of December 2007

Posted by XoopsCouncil on 2007/12/3 16:37:13 (18965 reads) | Posted on XOOPS
The XOOPS official website www.xoops.org is approaching its 6 year anniversary.

In the past weeks, some critical issues have been resolved, including the usage of XOOPS official domain, the setup of XOOPS new server, the migration of XOOPS websites.

Now the XOOPS community is moving faster towards a better open source future.

1) The XOOPS Official Website Hosting

It soon will be six years since the original launch of the XOOPS official website www.xoops.org.
In the past few years the XOOPS official website has received hosting and management services from EPC, Inc.
Due to changes in EPC's business interests, the XOOPS Project Council started seeking alternative hosting for the last couple of months.
After two weeks conversation the XOOPS council decided on Surpass Hosting, Inc., who are well known to the XOOPS community.
They have provided the XOOPS Project with a dedicated server at 50% discount.
The cost of this has been paid by the XOOPS Project Council with their own donation.

2) The XOOPS Official Domain name

The XOOPS official websites will consist of the XOOPS core development site at Sourceforge and the main websites using sub-domains of xoops.org.
Two weeks ago Mr. Ono Kazumi (a.k.a. Onokazu, the XOOPS project founder), transferred xoops.org DNS to Taiwen Jiang (a.k.a. phppp, the XOOPS lead developer). The domain name xoops.org is now pointing to the new XOOPS server.

3) Community Driven Collaboration

The XOOPS Council was created to help guide towards a better open source future, it aims are to combine the efforts from all different contributors, by any means possible.
Now that several critical issues have been solved, the XOOPS Project is able to move forward much faster as a community driven project.
During the process of server migration, some destroyed contents on www.xoops.org have been restored, including some user accounts and their posts which were removed by some hacks in the past weeks. However dev.xoops.org contents are not able to restore due to lack of adequate backups. The development wiki will be moved to www.xoops.org wiki manually.

4) What's Next?

(1) Continuation of the community driven management structural proposals.
(2) Continuing and formulating the sites redesigning, led by the XOOPS Theme Design Team.
(3) Clarifying XOOPS documentation by combining xoops.org documents with the existing community docs and wiki sites. This will be continued and maintained by the documentation team and communities support.
(4) Improved XOOPS repositories by combining the existing xoops.org repositories (core, module and theme) with the module dev.xoops.org and the Sourceforge repository.
A repository team will maintain this centralized repository to provide XOOPS with an organized and up to date resource. A new repository module will be developed to help with better module information synchronization.
The current module development site needs maintenance and will need fixing. A development guide team will take responsibility of rebuilding dev.xoops.org, with the team members consisting of core development, third party module developers, theme designers and contributors.
(5) The release of XOOPS 2.0.18 will be mainly for security fixes.

DJ that wasn't you that started to seek alternatives that was the foundation, you just screwed thing up afterwards, as we could of had this site on the new servers months ago.

So all this and you wasted the money spent on new servers, you already had new servers.

DJ are you talking out of your back wind pipe?

You just pee all over everyone's work and contributions, you disrespect people with your behaviour and actions, I very much doubt you could combine anything.

Your loosing core developers because you treat them like crap, your loosing valuable contributors because you either walk all over their work or ignore then outstanding efforts. You treated the people that care about XOOPS like crap.

Why was the design not ready for opening, you've had months to prepare.

Ohh let me translate, your leeching others work, bringing it into your own DJ team, and will you be taking credit sir or will you do the honourable thing for a change?

Then Why in the world has the block: 'Recent downloads'has been made visible on the mainpage, if the repository has not been updated and a lot of module links aren't working?
B.t.w, the above quoted lines are very old news. Lot of ppl wanted to help out to fix this section the last couple of 12+ months.... Because nothing has happened finally xoopsaddons was created.
It looks like we love to reinvent/redo the wheel again and again.
And euhm,...where is the new xoops.org theme?
Where is the block: recent comments?

I am sorry, but I feel somewhat angry and call, it disappointed.

Does this all mean that the XOOPS.org website is not hosted at the servers of the foundation?

Yes that's what it means, so all the XOOPSers whom donated to this project have had their money wasted, thanks to DJ.

He likes to waste peoples times, effort and now money.

You could say he also Stole all the data too.............. as they are not on XOOPS Servers, their on his own.

What is "contents"?. I believe that the site can not open again now, but the files must be accesibles in a repository.
It is the work of a lot or people for long time ago and the xoopers need the files. It is not acceptable that situation.

About "What's Next?", the Proposal Team must have outputs this month. Then, why all these empty desires?. Nothing will be done (or must not be done) and if anything is done, what if it is against the outputs of Proposal Team?.

Well well,
It's great to see the site back, I visit the XOOPS site everyday since 1 1/2 years ago. I really like to open source idea. We don't have to go far to look for good and productive open source similar projects which attract financing, openads is a good example. Look at Mambo CMS they just did major moves to keep the project as open as possible.

Xoops has the ability to attract investments since a lost of orgs and companies use it. I think is reaching a mature state. Ideas like enabling users (eg. companies) to generate financial income would of automatically open the streams of donations in order to continue with its development.

Marketing is the other idea.

Enabling users to easily find packages to create eg. social sites, for example if I want to create a social like site having a list of the relevant production ready and up-to-date modules is a lot easier than spending months to locate good functionality modules. It like having your hands without the fingers. It's your fingers that make your arm usefull and efficient, right.

And naturally their are a lot of people who just like developing and debugging which is the backbone of this project of course.

Like in any project their are challenges which can always be overcomed.

So friends this is my two cents here, thumbs up. Get ready.... Go ahead with the project.

Finally the wait is over!

It seems like the new Website is faster than the old one, and hopefully it will stay that way.

Many of us keep getting 500 server errors and time outs.

It's been reported so hopefully it should be fixed shortly.

thanks indeed to those who put huge efforts into that big change during many days.
A big special thanks to Ono. A project that doesn't respect its founder is a dead project.

About all of us : it's up to us to slow down self- esteem and to begin a new start with sage behavior.

We have plenty of core dev talents : Minahito, Ono, DJ, Predator, Catz, Mith, Skalpa, DaveL, etc.
We have plenty of mod dev talents
We have plenty of theme dev talents
We have plenty of people willing to contribute
We have plenty of brilliant & experimented people to invite to come in
We have already great visions : the modularity of the XOOPS Cube concept, some vision about XOOPS CMS evolution, the willing to act as professionals.
Let's go back to our essence, let's go back to minimalism, let's go back to security, let's go back to the step by step approach, let's go back to the out of the box concept, let's make XOOPS more modular, let's focus on php5/6, let's move on !

More than yesterday, it's time to write our Community & Project Manifesto, to start the armistice, to apologize for those who made errors, and the let all of us to imagine the project's future.

It's up to us to grow up, away from non transparent money considerations, and private clubs attitudes, and close to true open source, team work, and knowledge sharing.
For maturity, innovation, for the interests of all, for the project, for Open Source.

Debanius,
I have volunteered to do what I can to restore the files manually... when the database becomes available in the next couple of days.

maybe we can find a way to work together to achieve restoring the files.

Yes.
The server is configured differently from old server.
It might take a few more days for server admins to tune.

Ohh, shouldn't this of been done thoroughly first with a test version, before moving a heavily use production site over?

I know it was done on the project servers that XOOPS was originally supposed to be moved too, was it done on your private servers?

You proclaimed on XOOPSinfo that it's time to move on. I hope, you'll follow the same here.

Let's not make the debates/disagreements personal. The XOOPSInfo Code of Conduct should be applied over here too, incl. flaming and personal attacks.

what's up can't DJ talk for himself, are you his mouth now. My issues with DJ are that 'With Him' he chooses to ignore me privately so I'll make them public until he acknowledges and apologises.

And here is what was stated on XI:

Madfish:
Quote:
This is just a suggestion, but perhaps posts about xoops.org management issues should be posted on xoops.org, where they may be seen by the appropriate people.

My reply:

Quote:
Yes your right, sorry.

XI is for support, no more posts from me about management issues, I'm ready to move on from this.

So yes he's right those questions should be made here, XI is for support, so I'll move on.

Ok so lets break this down further for you

XI = Support
Because of that management issues should not be posted there = I will stop posting them there and move on.

I'm here, I've moved on.

I'm not making them personal, you can't make something personal that has already been done and he already did that, but if I make them personal against you or crap on you, or treat your work with disrespect and ignore what you do, then sack you for no reason at all with out even telling you or letting you know, then ignore all attempts of communication, then once more walking all more work that you or friends and colleagues supporting the community has done, then you have permission to address me.

Until then find something else to amuse yourself with.

Its like working with the japanese and chinese nursery. Funny part of the story is that xoopsers from other parts of the world do not recognise what is the problem and remain naive.

Pointing DNS is not enough.

The entire legal responsibility should and MUST remain in the control of XOOPS foundation, i.e. the Registrant _MUST_ also point XOOPS Foundation and not just DNS.

Now it shows following current registrant:

There are DNS issues - just use one of the free tools out there. xoops.org times out with a failed connection, and www.xoops.org gets you where you are going. Maybe this is by design...it may be a name server issue, either way, it should be very easy to fix.

This is a childs game to fix it. I am more than surprised that it has not been fixed yet.

Following is the fix:

Create a .htaccess and insert the following code in it:
Quote:

RewriteEngine On

RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.xoops.org$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.xoops.org/$1 [L,R=301]

This will redirect all the browser calls to www of xoops.org.
