If you view my site internetmoneyarticles.com you will see on the home page, the login box has problems, if you go to the user profile page(link top left corner) theres no problem. Also the "remember me" function does not work. Thanks for the advice!

Weird is that eg the remember me text is in one case displayed and for the other the name of the define.
That could be because in one case /user.php is in use and in the other /modules/profile/user.php
But anyway missing texts on this should mean your installation is not correct and some files are wrong or missing.
Do the file check (see release notes).

If I try to run checksum.php my browser tries to download it and does not run it.

And it was placed in the XOOPS_ROOT aside mainfile.php?

If that is the case, then there is something very wrong with your server.
When the server suggest to download a php file it is mosttimes in case of misconfiguration (but then other PHP files should have the same) or overload (unable to cope with HTML requests).
Contact your hoster about this.
