Can XOOPS run locally without webhost?

I am thinking it would be nice to install, setup and run XOOPS from my local machine and view within IE etc. I imagine I would need PHP, MySQL and apache server installed and running on my local machine as well. This will work right? Won't I get the similar hands on experience? I'm just not certain yet where my hosting service will be but want to begin working with the system anyway.

Please advise I'm pretty new to this.

Yes, you'll need what you said. Have a look at the XSAS server link to your left, it gives you all that with XOOPS included!

Thank you, so MySQL I need to go get on my own correct? It doesn't seem to be a part of he XSAS server package. Yet in the "readme.txt" it provides database host, username and password info. This not for MySQL right?
