Good point. Shall we start to work on that.

First let's come up with a vision statement for XOOPS the product and a vision statement for the project.

Then we will come up with road map or mission statement of how we are going to get there.

Discussion about a vision and mission for the community will take place on Xoopsinfo.com.

What is your vision of the XOOPS product?

What is your vision of the XOOPS project?

kc0maz, I'd rather post my thoughts here on Xoops.org.

Here is my Vision and Mission Statement for Xoops:

Vision Statement
Xoops is powerful, integrated CMS environment used in the creation and maintenance of commercial and personal websites.

Mission Statement
• Foster a centralized unified community for end users, developers (core, module, theme, etc.), and documentation specialists
• Certify modules as “Xoops Ready” (need to establish consensus on what this entails) to ensure successful implementation
• Distribute XOOPS as a package of XOOPS core, modules, themes that are maintained by XOOPS on Xoops.org.
• Generate revenue streams for development, enhancements, and upgrades.
• Create and maintain new product offerings that are easily deployed and flexible by the entire XOOPS user base.

Respectfully submitted,

Kurt

• As for modules, they need to have somthing on them and place in a spot that states they are for version 1 or 2
if they are php4 or php5, sql4 sql5 ready, same with the core files. as for the cerrent modules, almost half the modules we have dont work any more due to version change or not php5 ready. for this we need some one that is good in code, and XOOPS core files, and fix the modules, sence thats is one of the larges complaints....

•• As for offical modules and modules added to the "Out of the box" xoops, this was done in the pre 2.0.11 . Its unsure why they desided to remove them, but they did..

••• Put them back in there, update them, you can still offer the packets of "theme" based modules
Just give a new user somthing to tinker with while they start to understand what they have.

• Theme, if we can get some theme designers to take the cerrent themes we do have, and convert them to 2.0.14+
we will have less of a headack, but as said in the modules section, these to should be placed in a spot that states they are for version 1 or 2.

• Generate revenue
Im sure if just these ( above ) are met, many users will chip in some $ to have themes and modules updated and converted to work on the cerrent, and future version of xoops.
granted many versions and XOOPS based modules are built and made free of charge, and those that arnt have been donated to and charged for.
why cant xoops? chage for the use of the name.. or to be a partner, "offical" does mean alot....
If the core team cam out with a killer looking userpanel as a update im sure no one will mine if that hade to pay for it.... say 20 bux....

• The cerrent XOOPS •

now thats a isue in its self....

most of use ( if you have been here around 2005-2006 ) or have asked about the avatars....found out that XOOPS has a bad db..

Well fix it. dont sit on it.
so what, the xoops_config is all messed up..

make a new "updated" XOOPS site on server of off, subdomain or what ever...
tranfer files images, modules, uploads, and any other "needed items", for the data base... tranfer everything but the 3 config files... youll have to set up the site like a new site, but all users are there, messages, folders, files you just have to place the block in the right places and deal with the meta, name, and slogan related things...

( Im cerrently doing this with HelpXoops.info )
its about 85-90% done, i just need to deal with the blocks... )

yah well 2.0.16 has isues,
well so does the rest, but if you expect use to use it, you should to. " teach what you preach"

as stated in a earlier post ( same topic )

make some sub domain, label them, use one XOOPS or multi...
and link the db with a bridge..

these are a few that came to mine.

See 2nd bullet point of my Mission Statement. This is exactly what I am taling about. But if you read the entire point it said "(need to establish consensus on what this entails)". So it still needs to be worked out. I suggest something like Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum certified modules, themes, etc. An example would be Bronze is PHP4, MySQL 4, Silver could be PHP5, MySQL5, Gold could be XOOPS 2.0.* and 2.* compatible and Platinum wouled be something above that! Agree?

Not sure I understand this one, but it seems related to the statement above ("Official" modules?).

Same as "Certified" modules as stated above

Again, "Certified" components.

"Killer userpanel"? Not sure what you are looking for, but this is an idea addressed by my 5th bullet point in the my Mission Statement. However $20 aint gonna cut it. We need to get full time programmers, theme writers, etc driving this thing.

How about a Corporate Sponsorship? X Window System (X, or X11) was Open Source but someone came along and Created Motif (a toolkit to work with X) and it was a great success. Why cant we do the same here?[/quote]

Thanks for your ideas, however, kc0maz asked for a Vision Mission Statement. Not a long drawn out post about stuff that's broken.

The original post from kc0maz asked for a vision statement. I delivered what was asked. I also added a Mission Statement. Opinions are always welcome, however, nobody, except myself has posted a Vision or Mission Statement.

I have been gone for a day or so to celebrate my tenth wedding anniversary.

when I got back, I was hoping to see some good ideas for vision statements or at least some discussion of how the three areas would work together.

There was only one vision statement for the product:

Vision Statement

Xoops is powerful, integrated CMS environment used in the creation and maintenance of commercial and personal websites.

I am going to reword that just a bit to:

Xoops is the most widely distributed integrated Content Management System environment used in the creation and maintenance of commercial, non-profit and personal websites.

The XOOPS Project, and Xoops.org is the home of the XOOPS CMS Core, and possibly core applications.
support sites, documentation sites, community sites and anything else essential to XOOPS is linked through the XOOPS Project, and Xoops.org. to that end:

The XOOPS Project is the core of Xoops; They coordinate all activities, set the standard for modules and themes as well as maintain and update the core code of the XOOPS CMS

The Community or XOOPS info is the meeting place for web masters, module developers, theme writers, and anyone else with a interest in Xoops. It is here that new ideas are born, and brought in to development, for example X-garage. It is the Community that provides the applications and themes for XOOPS CMS.

The XOOPS Community is informal place that various people can meet and develop new ideas; and make those ideas into usable applications for the entire community

Now is this what you want XOOPS to look like in the end?

Northern does makes some good points. It would be best if we address those with the mission statement. The mission statement is how we are going to get to our vision from where we are now.

Maybe you didn't recognize, you got some discussion of how the three areas would work together. You told khuhner to go to xoopsinfo and he said, essentially "I think not" he likes it here and believes this is fragmenting XOOPS against his will.

As for the mission/vision statement they were layed out and approved by the council before the teams were finalized.

What I see happening here amounts to you're trying to get approval for the three way split by introducing it via a mission statement.

KC, Do you really want an answer and what if it is no?

Maybe I missed it somewhere, I did find a mission for the various individual teams, including the project council, nothing for XOOPS project as a whole.

Northern Correctly stated

every business plan I seen had in the first few pages A vision statement, and mission statement. These two statements act as a guide for the rest of the plan. (This is Business 101, folks) We need a simple straight forward statement that says "This is what we want XOOPS to look like." and "this is how we are going to get there."
Quote:

The idea of the three areas came from the project council.

Before I started this project I sought and received the approval from the project council.

You have the very best coders, the most brilliant business staff, and the most proficient writers in the world on board, however unless you give them a direction and a goal to work toward, they will stand around and spin their wheels. That is the entire purpose of this little exercise, to set a that goal, in simple terms that everyone can work toward.

Maybe I was asking too much at one time, so let me simplify it some.

What should XOOPS look like to be able to call the project a success?
Some dream of success, while others wake up and work for it.
