I wrote an article about this at XOOPS Brasil, but it is in Portuguese.

Maybe this can help you:

Go to Admin Panel and access System Admin > Modules.

There you can install new modules. The news and forum modules are avaliable on default installations of XOOPS.

Open the theme.html file, find "logo.gif" and replace by "logo.jpg".

Don't forget to set "Update module template .html files from themes/your theme/templates directory?" option to "Yes" at Preferences of System Admin.

It is the default news module. To show the news on the main page, you have to set the news module as the main page module, at Preferences of System Admin.

PHP is not limited to creating just HTML output. It can also be used to create and manipulate image files in a variety of different image formats, including gif, png, jpg, wbmp, and xpm. Even more convenient, PHP can output image streams directly to a browser. You will need to compile PHP with the GD library of image functions for this to work. GD and PHP may also require other libraries, depending on which image formats you want to work with.

From:http://www.php.net/manual/en/ref.image.php

Quote:
FreeType 2 is a software font engine that is designed to be small, efficient, highly customizable and portable while capable of producing high-quality output (glyph images). It can be used in graphics libraries, display servers, font conversion tools, text image generation tools, and many other products as well..

Note that FreeType 2 is a font service and doesn't provide APIs to perform higher-level features, like text layout or graphics processing (e.g. colored text rendering, "hollowing", etc..). However, it greatly simplifies these tasks by providing a simple, easy to use and uniform interface to access the content of font files.

Fromhttp://freetype.sourceforge.net/freetype2/index.html

It is a very useful feature for manipulation and creation of images using PHP.

Hmmm... it seems very interesting.

Did you tested it? Can you send us a feedback?

Thanks!

Try to clean the /templates_c folder.

Download some themes and take a look at their codes and try to understand them. This is the best way to learn how it works.

Ps: nice layout!

Btw how many MySQL databases are needed to run XOOPS?

Xoops uses only one database. And you can install unlimited XOOPS sites into a single database by using different table prefixes for each site.
