Shuld be 2.0, as 2.2 does not have other modules except pm and extended profile.
2.0 comes with version 1.0 of newbb (you could check that in system admin -> modules, there is verion column).
If that is your case, go to system admin -> forum -> edit forum and chose the forum you want to edit. Then in "Access Level:" drop down menu select "Registered users only" and for "Type:" select "Public" and click on "Save changes".
You will have to do that for all forums.

As far as I remember, they will asign users to group based on a key/code entered by user on registration, but I never used those modules on live/production site.
