Re: i wanna make my site with xoops but i need more help on how!

Hi...
Just food for the brain...
Go to www.godaddy.com and buy your own domain 10 dollars US max per year! Then you own your own website address. Very cheap thing to do!

Now

Go here and sign up for a reseller account.
www.dathorn.com 13 dollars a month. You can host as many domain names as you want! This means if you buy 10 domain names from godaddy.com you can host all of them at one time with dathorn.com under a reseller program. If fact you can host alot of your friends domain names also. You can even split the cost of the whole thing.

Dathorn has a very helpful forum for any newbie questions.

You will need a few basic tools to work on your websites.

WS_FTP LE = This will put the files on your new reseller account / server
http://www.ipswitch.com/downloads/index.html

Putty = Ssh client lets you unpack XOOPS on your server.
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html

MetaPad = Better than notepad plus free
http://www.liquidninja.com/metapad/download.html

Pixie = Very useful color tool
http://www.nattyware.com/pixie.html

Gimp = Free photoshop like program for making your grafics.
http://www2.arnes.si/~sopjsimo/gimp/
http://gug.sunsite.dk/
http://www.gimp.org/

7Zip = the best compression program on the net plus free.
http://www.7-zip.org/

IrfanView = Grafics viewer plus other cool stuff
http://www.irfanview.com/

Last but not least
Xoops = One hell of a good CMS...
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=41586
Every file you could ever possibly need is on that link.

If you need any help what so ever just PM me and I will be glad to answer any questions you have.

Regards
Billy

Ps: I know your overseas but you still have a way to spend US money dont you? Not sure on that one...

Good luck

I'm trying to make the next version more international friendly.

Perhaps someone can explain to me a simple way to use the defines in languages/xxx/template.php in templates directly.

If I have

define("_AM_BOOKSTORE_LANG_AUTHOR", "Authors");

I'd like to put something like the following in the template code:

<{$_AM_BOOKSTORE_LANG_AUTHOR}>

But it doesn't work.

I can just make a list of all the entries in the defines, like this:

$intl = array
(
"error" =>_AM_BOOKSTORE_LANG_ERROR,
"author" =>_AM_BOOKSTORE_LANG_AUTHOR,
"sales_rank" =>_AM_BOOKSTORE_LANG_SALES_RANK,
"publisher" =>_AM_BOOKSTORE_LANG_PUBLISHER,
"published" =>_AM_BOOKSTORE_LANG_PUBLISHED,
"our_price" =>_AM_BOOKSTORE_LANG_OUR_PRICE,
"more_info" =>_AM_BOOKSTORE_LANG_MORE_INFO,
"notice" =>_AM_BOOKSTORE_LANG_PLEASE_NOTE,
);

And pass it into the template. It just seems inefficient to have to define the extra list.

Any suggestions?

Tom

Hi,

I learned about XOOPS in a College course. I don't have the skills to do the things discussed on this forum. Is there a commerical version I could purchase to lower the learning curve?

Thank you!

Hi,

I am just wondering how to elminate the 3 blocks in the header athttp://www.tangoforce.net I have tried editing the themes.html and it seems to have no effect whatsoever on the theme. I even uploaded an empty theme.html and nothing changed.

What am I doing wrong?

Most of the color options will be in the CSS files. Unless they are hardcoded in the theme files.

I would suggest you get a little reading under your belt before tackling the modification of files.

Go to w3schools and read up on HTML, PHP, CSS. Use a text editor (Notepad, Wordpad, Dreamweaver or AceHTML) and find code as examples of the lessons in the XOOPS files.

Like they say, give a man a fish and you feed him for one meal, teach him to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.

Peace.

in the theme file..

would it be possible to put the header section.. basically mine is just 2 images

left 1 and a right background tiled image where the banner goes over..

i would like this top section to use a frame, so that when people click a link etc, only the content below the header.. the left/center/right blocks will change etc as normal but the header logo and banner part stay on the screen and don't have to be reloaded every time..

how can i go about this?

also it has to allow for the fact that some people may not be able to use frames so it shud detect the browser and determine whether to use a frame or not..
