Like you I too searched around and initially was going for phpNuke because of their modules but after reviewing how difficult it is to do groups and group access I settled for XOOPS which has a pretty no brainer way to set up your group and group access. A big plus its also very very easy to install. I think my daughter (2 year old) could do it and I installed many CMS's to try out.

All my sites (4) are on XOOPS now and many of them I've moved servers many times and XOOPS stands up with every move, very little or zero problems. A good place to test out many of the CMS's visit www.opensourcecms.com see for yourself. It really boils down to what you want the CMS to do because some just do a particular thing better than others.

I'm still somewhat of a newbie, so bear with me.

My forums module appears to be looking in the site root folder for newtopic.php when you click on "new topic" as opposed to siteroot/modules/newbb/... so right now I cannot add any new topics (I get a 404 error). I'm not sure where to fix that... the config.php shows this:

// You shouldn't have to change any of these
$bbUrl['root'] = XOOPS_URL."/modules/newbb/";
$bbUrl['admin'] = $bbUrl['root']."admin";
$bbUrl['images'] = $bbUrl['root']."images";
$bbUrl['smilies'] = $bbUrl['images']."smiles";

Am I just looking in the wrong spot?

Pleeeeeaaaasssee help me!

BTW, the "archives" section of the news module also has this problem... clicking on April 2004 (there are no others) also gives a 404 error because it is also looking in the siteroot.

I have tried uninstall/install and update module, to no avail... and I can't find any other applicable info in this forum...

Thanks so much!

I keep a local copy of customized files.

I usually edit them locally, and then upload them to the server.

Sometimes I'll make changes on the server. In that case, I'll download the changes to my computer, so that they'll be in synch.

In addition, I do periodic backups of the server, download the backups to my computer, and then copy them to a CD.

My web hosting service does backups too, but I don't want to depend on that. In fact, they told me that their backups are done on another device within the same box. That wouldn't protect against certain types of problems, such as fire, water damage, theft, etc.

As XOOPS is a dynamic web content management system, almost all it's content (except images, most likely) is in the database. This means that for the day-to-day management you don't need to have a local copy of your content to edit. All editing and adding is done into the database itself. If you're on a shared host, probably daily backups of the database are made, but if you want to be really really really secure, you can make a database dump yourself using phpmyadmin or similar tools. Same with all your files. A monthly backup (or an update of the previous backup) of all your files in your site, should be enough, as you will not need to edit those ever again (if it is all running smoothly).

As for the setup and implementation of a new site, I think it is best to do that locally (using the XSAS for instance -do a search, it's the XOOPS Stand Alone Server, an excellent tool to test XOOPS locally without any hassle). Mostly theme editing there, but you might want to change a few things in a few files when you're cr3eating your new site layout etc.

I hope this helps!

I would like to get comments from the devs about using the $myts->... syntax with the REMOTE_ADDR var. I was just going along with the syntax of the other vars. I'm not exactly sure if I needed to do that.

I don't think it's necessary, since $HTTP_SERVER_VARS['REMOTE_ADDR'] probably won't contain any backslashes (\), but it shouldn't hurt anything.

That function simply calls the PHP function stripslashes.

But in new code, it's better to use $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'].

That's something for the themes department, I think It is a cool effect indeed, if you have a theme to fit this into. How and where would you want to implement this?

ill try that now and then come back to you if it doesnt
work. yes i was given a tempory url, but it looked like a folder or something, when i install xooops into the public_html folder then i should be able to go into my temporary URL and then click on publick html and the XOOPS installation should come up?
after that it seems pretty easy.

I'm looking at XOOPS (and cms in general), and was wondering how people administer it day-to-day. Do you

- do all things via a web control panel, and depend on backups on the server?

OR

- do things locally on your box, and then upload as necessary, so that you always have the "official" versions of your (non-db) content of the site?

The reason I ask is that I am a little nervous about not doing things locally, uploading as necessary. I am not even sure if this is something easy to do.

-TIA
