I am aware that 2.0.9 beta has some issues with file and folder permissions. I'll let someone else package 2.0.9 beta2 or RC to avoid this next time
So far, we have only had error reports from PHP5 platforms and 2.0.9 that were caused by these permission issues.
Thank you for your great going-through of setting up a webserver properly. I am sure that it will be valuable for others, too, and will bookmark this thread so that I can remember to add it, where it is easier for new visitors to find.

"XOOPS is the mall; it’s the general hull that provides services to its tenants. Have you seen a mall with no stores? There’s no reason to go there at all; the same is true about XOOPS. If you see just the hull, there are not many reasons to visit the site. "
I still stand by that, but I also acknowledge that the best modules are not created by the core developers, but by module developers on dev.xoops.org and elsewhere.
Therefore I will by the time we release the core without modules have easy-to-download packages of selected modules, together solving particular tasks. This could be a Community Pack with modules such as Newbb2, News 1.2.1, SmartFAQ and WF-Downloads. When someone downloads the "Mall" they also expect shiny "Stores" - not old modules that have served their time and should be replaced before evening "opening the Mall".
I believe that this is best accomplished by separating the core from the modules and - as XOOPS Module Development Team Leader - I see it as my responsibility to communicate my recommendations on quality modules to the XOOPS users.
- oh, one last thing. If you have to enable register_globals to get things working, something is not working as it should. RG should be off and XOOPS should be working with it off (I cannot guarantee this for all modules, naturally, but properly coded modules should not rely on register globals - if the core does not work properly without register globals set to on, it is a bug and I kindly ask you to submit it as
a bug report on XOOPS' Sourceforge.net project pages with as many details as you can possibly give)
