Yes, but yours is based on false assumptions.

If you search for "free" XOOPS themes, they come up in the search.
That is a problem of Google, but free does not always mean gratis. And you can not obtain rights on the results of a search machine.
Many sites advertise with free downloads, when the (shareware) programs come with a license that ask you to pay when you will use the program. There is nothing wrong about that.

There is no mention of payment anywhere on their website until you try to download one of their "free" themes.
Come on!
You must be blind!
It is very prominent showed on their front page! You can't miss the amount in the center. There are also the terms and conditions and the FAQ.
It seems an example of an honest site, where potential users are well informed about the costs and the conditions.
That you enter the site by a sideway via a search engine link, is not detrimental to that.

That's also illegal, it's called "bait and switch"
That is something different and absolutly not the case here.

Their names and their content should hint their place and function.
You can always add a tag in each of them and then see which has been used in the HTML source code.

PS: In stead of the <br /> in the mainmenu add
td#mainmenu a { display:block; }

to style.css

as for someone who is a member downloading the theme for me, i don't see it as "illegal"
Well it is!
In civilised countries, you are bound by a contract, and that comes with all its terms and conditions, that were agreed between the two parties.

If you are not willing to p(l)ay your part of the bargain, you have the choice of not being involved.
Reading only partially the terms and conditions is no ground for accusing people of illegal activities.
I see only one illegal act here, and that is trying to let other people break their legally bound agreement.

Is the theme worth 40$?
Ask yourself, can I make it myself? How many time (and (by the hour rate) money) will it cost me for making it? Are the 'boring' alternatives 40$ less beautiful?
Then you know if you have to buy it.
If not, walk away and don't look back.

Unreadable? How does it looks like?
Maybe try Notepad++, it has some encoding options.

Else, you need to restore the site eg on your local PC.

Right, with that theme there are no templates for modules.
So, out of the box it should work OK with the forum (tested here with NewBB 3.08 and XOOPS 2.4.2).

Probably you messed up a template. Set once the debug on in system general preferences. (Check PHP and Smarty debug).
Was the cloning of the templates done without errors?
Are there not red coloured items?

All fora are independent. The counts are the real counts of the posts in a forum. The posts in a subforum do not belong to the parent forum and should not be counted as such.
If you add the count of the children to it, the pagination of the parent forum will be disturbed, because there are less posts available then indicated.

Try to live with the current behaviour.

|truncate:100:
That is a Smarty instruction to be used in templates.
You are dealing with PHP:
$xoTheme->addMeta('meta''description'"$title $ctitle $type $price $typeprice ".substr($desctextclean,0,100) );

syahzuan, Welcome to the XOOPS Forum!

If he wants the original presentation you need a working XOOPS. It is no big deal, you can do it on your local PC with eg XAMPP. Use the files and database backup to recreate the site on your PC. (See the FAQ about moving sites between servers.)

Depending on the manner of how its backup is created, he can retrieve also the bare texts of his postings. Mosttimes they are in the form of readable SQL statements, like create table .. and insert into table, fieldlist, data ...
With a normal text editor you can open this database backup and then search in the data.

strangen, Welcome to the XOOPS Forum!

Which theme do you use? Maybe the provided templates in the theme are intended for another version of NewBB (3.08 is the current).
Look for the /modules/newbb/ directory inside your theme directory and compare the templates there with the original from the newbb module and try to adapt them.
