Chapter 1. Preamble

Please read this!

Welcome to the world of XOOPS and this installation guide that will try to help you getting your XOOPS site up and running in no time! This guide is geared for new installations only - if you wish to move your site to another location or if you wish to update it you should visit the guides/pages for them.

Before we start though, we'll need to verify that you have what you need to install XOOPS. With other words, make sure you got this installed on your webserver. If you aren't sure, don't worry - most webhosts offer this (free webhosts are another story though). So, please verify if your host provides this:

  • A webserver like Apache or ISS (this is almost always installed);
  • PHP 5 (PHP 4 is supported until the release of 2.5);
  • MySQL 4.1 or higher.

When that's okay, make sure you also have this information available:

  • The name of your database you'll be using (ask your host if unsure);
  • The password and username for that database (ask your host if unsure);
  • The location of your database server (mostly it's localhost - if unsure try localhost);

When everything is okay and everything is ready, we'll need to upload those files. Do that and continue on to the next chapter in this guide.
